What Is Cold Process Soap?
Cold process soap-making is the traditional method of handcrafted soap-making created completely from scratch using raw oils, butters, lye, and carefully selected ingredients.
At Hugs n Bubbles, every soap bar is handcrafted using this time-honored process because it allows us to create nourishing, long-lasting soaps filled with skin-loving ingredients and beautiful artisan character.
Cold process soap is very different from mass-produced commercial soap.
It is slower.
More intentional.
More customizable.
And deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship.
Nature has the answer.
How Cold Process Soap Is Made
Cold process soap begins by combining oils and fats with a lye solution.
While the word “lye” can sound intimidating, it is an essential part of real soap-making. During the soap-making process, lye reacts with oils and fats through a chemical reaction called saponification.
This process transforms the mixture into actual soap and naturally occurring glycerin.
Without lye, true soap cannot be created.
What Is Saponification?
Saponification is the chemical reaction that turns oils and lye into soap.
During this process:
- oils and fats react with sodium hydroxide (lye)
- the ingredients transform into soap molecules
- natural glycerin is created
- the lye is fully neutralized within the finished soap
Once saponification is complete, the soap is no longer caustic and is considered technically safe.
However, the soap is not yet ready to use.
That is where curing becomes important.
Why Handmade Soap Needs Time to Cure
After soap is poured into molds and removed, it must cure for several weeks before becoming the gentle, long-lasting bar people love.
Most cold process soaps require approximately:
- 4–6 weeks of curing time
- sometimes longer for specialty recipes
During curing:
- excess water slowly evaporates
- the soap hardens
- the bar becomes milder
- the lather improves
- the soap lasts longer in the shower
This slow curing process is one reason handmade soap feels so different from commercial detergent bars.
Good soap takes time.
Why We Love Cold Process Soap-Making
Cold process soap-making allows for creativity, customization, artistry, and ingredient integrity in ways commercial soap production often cannot.
This method allows us to create:
- creamy lather
- beautiful artisan designs
- gentle cleansing bars
- nourishing goat milk formulas
- unique essential oil blends
- rich textures and natural ingredients
Every batch is:
- blended by hand
- poured by hand
- cut by hand
- cured carefully
- packaged by hand
No two batches are ever exactly alike, and that is part of what makes handmade soap so special.
Why Handmade Soap Feels Gentler
Many commercial soaps use synthetic detergents and harsh foaming agents that can leave skin feeling stripped or dry.
Cold process soap retains naturally occurring glycerin, which helps attract moisture to the skin and contributes to a gentler cleansing experience.
At Hugs n Bubbles, our goat milk soap bars are also crafted with:
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- castor oil
- shea butter
- kaolin clay
- botanical ingredients
- essential oils or clean fragrance oils
The result is a rich, creamy lather designed to leave skin feeling soft, balanced, and comfortable.
Essential Oils and Cold Process Soap
Essential oils behave differently in soap than they do in candles, perfumes, or diffusers.
During the saponification and curing process:
- some scent components naturally change
- some aromas soften
- some essential oils partially evaporate over time
This means more essential oil is often required to create a lasting scent in handmade soap, which is one reason essential oil soaps can be more expensive to produce.
The result, however, is often a softer, more natural aroma that many customers love.
Safety in Soap-Making
Cold process soap-making requires proper safety precautions because raw lye is highly corrosive before saponification occurs.
Soap makers use:
- gloves
- eye protection
- careful measurements
- controlled temperatures
- proper ventilation
At Hugs n Bubbles, every batch is carefully formulated and safely handcrafted using years of experience in skincare, esthetics, and aromatherapy.
Handmade Soap Is a Slow Craft
In today’s world of fast production and mass manufacturing, cold process soap-making remains beautifully slow.
It takes patience.
Precision.
Creativity.
And care.
Every bar carries hours of work, weeks of curing, and years of experience behind it.
That is the beauty of handmade soap.
Why We Continue to Use the Traditional Method
We believe skincare should feel intentional, nourishing, and connected to nature.
Cold process soap-making allows us to create products with:
- simple ingredients
- beautiful textures
- rich lather
- gentle cleansing
- artisan quality
- skin-loving oils
It is more work.
It takes more time.
But we believe your skin is worth it.
Nature has the answer.
