What is Avocado Oil and Why is it Used in Skincare?

Avocado oil has quickly become a go-to ingredient in clean skincare routines and for good reason. Pressed from the pulp of the avocado fruit, this rich, nutrient-packed oil is making waves for its ability to deeply nourish, restore, and calm the skin. But what exactly makes it so powerful? And how should you use it?

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the benefits of avocado oil for skin, how to apply it, who it’s best for, and what to look for in skincare products. At Soapy Saturdays, we believe in science-backed, vegan formulas that are as good for your skin as they are for the planet—and avocado oil is one of our favorite ingredients to deliver powerful, plant-based results.

Avocado oil is cold-pressed from the flesh of the avocado - not the seed - and is naturally deep green in color. It’s packed with vitamins A, D, E, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants that support skin health.

What makes it so popular?

  • It’s rich yet lightweight, which means it hydrates deeply without leaving an overly greasy residue.
  • It absorbs easily, making it perfect for dry or mature skin.
  • It’s well-tolerated, even by sensitive skin types.

You’ll find avocado oil in many of our clean, vegan, cruelty-free products formulated for real skin concerns with real results.

What Are the Benefits of Avocado Oil for Skin?

Deep Hydration

Avocado oil contains oleic acid, a fatty acid that helps your skin lock in moisture—making it a savior for dry or flaky skin types.

Boosts Collagen

It’s naturally rich in sterolins, which are known to support collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Soothes Inflammation

Loaded with vitamins C and E, avocado oil calms inflamed, red, or eczema-prone skin.

Protects the Skin Barrier

By preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), avocado oil keeps your skin’s protective barrier intact and resilient.

Supports Healing

Its regenerative properties make it an ideal option for skin that’s sun-exposed, irritated, or recovering from dryness.

For What Skin Types is Avocado Oil Best?

Dry Skin

Naturally emollient, avocado oil is a perfect match for skin that feels tight, rough, or visibly flaky.

Sensitive Skin

It’s generally well-tolerated and known for its calming, non-irritating profile. That said, a patch test is always a good idea.

Acne-Prone or Oily Skin

While rich, avocado oil is moderately comedogenic - best used in lightweight, non-pore-clogging formulas.

Mature Skin

Avocado oil helps improve skin elasticity and delivers lasting hydration, making it ideal for aging skin.

It has been used for thousands of years as a foundational oil for skincare, massage, and cooking.

Sesame oil is a highly nutrient-dense oil, rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, making it an excellent natural moisturizer for dry or aging skin. It possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties that help fight acne, reduce swelling, and soothe conditions like eczema. Olive Oil

Olive oil, a natural oil extracted from olives, offers numerous benefits for skin health. These include:

Moisturizing: Olive oil is rich in oleic acid and vitamin E, which deeply hydrate and nourish the skin, making it soft and supple.

Antioxidant Protection: Olive oil contains antioxidants, such as polyphenols and hydroxytyrosol, which protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution.

Anti-inflammatory Properties: Olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm irritated or sensitive skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.

Skin Elasticity: The antioxidants and nutrients in olive oil promote collagen production, which strengthens and improves skin elasticity, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Reduces Skin Aging: Olive oil's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects help combat premature skin aging by protecting against oxidative stress and reducing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Exfoliation: Olive oil can be used as a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and reveal a brighter, more radiant complexion.

Wound Healing: Olive oil has antimicrobial properties that can aid in wound healing and prevent infections.

Passionfruit Seed Oil

Passionfruit seed oil, or Maracuja oil, is a superior emollient that is heralded for its light, non-greasy texture, rapid absorption and fatty acid composition including Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids. Passionfruit oil is well suited for use in a wide array of personal care formulations intended to nourish and soothe mature, dry, parched or irritated skin. It is highly recommended in scalp and hair care products to encourage healthy hair growth and increased vitality.

Passionfruit oil is rich in vitamin A and potassium to help keep skin healthy. As well as being nourishing, passion fruit seed oil is antibacterial, so is good for use on acne-prone skin. As an anti-inflammatory and naturally anti-itch, this oil will help to reduce swelling and irritation of the skin. Passion fruit oil also contains ascorbic acid, β-carotene, calcium, flavonoids, phosphorus, and potassium. Gently brightening. Passion fruit oil has been shown to reduce sebum secretion, promoting a drier skin feel, and is an excellent addition to anti-acne and sensitive skin care applications.

Rich in polyphenols, passion fruit seed oil is known to have high antioxidant activity. This makes it a great skincare ingredient as it helps to neutralize the damage caused by free radicals, and prevent further damage.

Free radicals are molecules that are naturally released by the body with one or more unpaired electrons in its outer shell. When produced in excess – and where cells cannot adequately destroy the excess – free radicals and oxidants can bring the body into a state of oxidative stress, which can alter the cell’s structure.

These molecules ‘steal’ an electron from a healthy molecule to form their missing pairing, and consequently damages the healthy cell. Free radical damage causes both a breakdown to the DNA of your skin, and skin damage in the form of dryness, uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, broken blood vessels and crepey skin.

Antioxidants destroy free radicals, but during this process, the antioxidant itself becomes oxidized. Therefore, it’s important to constantly replenish the antioxidants in the body.

Collagen is by far the most abundant protein in mammals, and absolutely essential for the human body – making up around 30% of the proteins in the whole body. However, as we age, the amount of collagen that the body produces declines.

Helping to keep skin firm and supple as well as adding a hit of hydration, collagen is essential for maintaining skin elasticity. Passion fruit oil has been found to both increase collagen production and inhibit collagen and elastic degradation, which can help the skin to retain its moisture and elasticity.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has several potential benefits for the skin, including:

Regular topical application can increase natural collagen production, which improves skin elasticity and firmness.

Containers

Many years ago, my products shipped out in glass containers. After much research, I discovered glass has a larger and negative impact on the environment during manufacturing. Further research allowed me to discover PET plastic packaging. Better for the environment, less expensive to purchase, no glass breaking in the shower or bathroom, and essential oils are protected. The decision was simple. "Glass is best for preserving sensitive actives (like Vitamin C or retinol) due to its chemical inertness, whereas PET plastic is lightweight, shatter-resistant, and highly travel-friendly. While glass offers a luxury feel, PET is the modern choice for sustainability, shipping efficiency, and budget-conscious brands."

Researchers at the French food safety agency ANSES conducted experiments on glass and plastic bottles containing soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, beer, and to some extent wine, and found that glass bottles harbored an average of 100 microplastic particles per liter, five to 50 times more than were detected in plastic.

However, if you want glass containers, I am more than happy to oblige. Just let me know so I can purchase the items needed. In addition, there will be an extra charge that goes with your order.

Our skincare is lovingly made in small batches and hand poured into glass containers. This personal approach allows for unique and excellent products for you skin.

We recommend you use your skincare within 4 months of purchase as the scent from essential oils can dissipate over time. Please discontinue use if skin irritation occurs. If you need anything, please reach out to us.
